Its business may be the stuff under our feet but, when it comes to standards, Island flooring company Floor to Floor, which celebrates 10 years this month, is right up at the top.
Located in spacious premises on Bells Road, on the edge of Stornoway town centre, the friendly carpets, vinyls and laminates specialist can boast a welcoming atmosphere and speedy service – you may even get a Gaelic song thrown in for good measure too.
As its name suggests there’s no floor to big or too small for the team here, led by Gress-born businessman and Gaelic singer Murdo "Cloudy" MacLeod – and, no, the Mod trophies in the window are not for sale!
Cloudy and carpet fitters John Neil "Fred" MacDonald, Iain Mackenzie and Shaun Mackenzie have created nothing short of a walk-in catalogue featuring the very best in domestic and industrial flooring sourced at top trade shows around the UK.
"We are so pleased to be celebrating 10 years in business" said Cloudy. "Its been a tough time for many trades of late and we would just like to thank our loyal as well as our new customers – both domestic and commercial - who have helped to keep smaller businesses like us alive."
Cloudy and Fred clubbed together to launch Floor to Floor after years working for others in the industry. They decided to pool their skills and see if they could make a go of it on their own.
Nowadays, Cloudy tends to cover the office and shop while Fred heads out with the boys all over the island – from Ness to South Harris - to carry out the free measuring and fitting service. It’s a testament to them that they still have the same staff after a decade of trading.
"We have a really friendly team and, from what we hear, that comes across in the customer experience," said Cloudy who around Mod time can often heard practicing a song behind the desk."I don’t think I’ve put too many people off the carpets yet" he joked. "I like to think its part of the service!"
Finding the right flooring has always been a challenge but ever-widening choices leave many struggling to make a decision. This is why Floor to Floor prioritizes helping customers find the right product and price for their needs: from hospitals and community centres to garden sheds – they have catered for them all.
"We get people in here asking for things we haven’t even heard of because they have seen it on DIY shows on the telly!" said Cloudy. "But that’s no problem, we like new ideas too and if we can get it in, we will!"
While large commercial contracts such as Stornoway’s Ardseileach Care Centre can take a little longer to organise, Cloudy and the team pride themselves on their quick turnaround for domestic jobs. Flooring can often be measured, ordered and fitted within as little as a week –A throughout Lewis and Harris.
"We do not charge for fitting or measuring carpets or vinyls, even if you are in a remote location," said Cloudy. "We are islanders, we know how difficult it can be to get supplies and services when you are in a remote place, so we try to make it as affordable and easy as possible."
To mark the shop’s 10th anniversary Cloudy and staff are hosting a two-day sale on all their products on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th April. Be sure to put it in your diary.
