The new site, which went “live” at the beginning of December 2017, makes it easier than before to ship your consignments of all sizes, arrange collection, track shipments and receive delivery confirmation - and all from the comfort of your home or office.  

“The new site puts us in line with major players in the nationwide courier industry,” said the Woody’s website designer and IT Manager Donald Sansom. 

“We are the first company on the island to do this for members of the public and we hope it will make a big difference and take some of the stress out of sending and receiving goods,” he added. 

Woody’s Express Parcels, long established in the islands and with an Inverness depot since 1989, and a Glasgow depot since 2015, has offered a portal of this type for business customers for a while but members of the public still had to call, email or drop into its Rigs Road offices to organize deliveries.  

“We have just got busier and busier over the years and the phone never stops ringing,” said Donald.  “It’s great but you can be serving a customer and trying to take calls all at the same time which is not easy on anyone – so we decided this year to make organizing the website for the public a priority.” 

Many people have come to enjoy, and expect, the freedom to arranging deliveries from home, online, after work.  It saves having to do it at lunchtime – or forgetting to do it at lunchtime!   

Now, thanks to the new website, Woody’s can provide a 24-hour booking service so you can organize your shipments when it suits you – in the middle of the night if you choose. 

The website allows customers to type in their parcel’s departure and delivery addresses via the site’s fast address look-up and the service will automatically calculate and produce an accurate quotation based on the information given. 

You can then arrange a delivery, or collection, anywhere in the UK for anything from small parcels to large pallets.  

“We can ship anywhere from Sark, in the Channel Islands, to Shetland – and anywhere in between - Northern Ireland as well,” said Donald.  “ We can deliver to all these places through a network of trusted subcontractors.”  

When you have chosen and accepted your quotation,  you will then be able to print off your own bar-coded label for your parcel with all the necessary information – saving you writing it out by hand or going down to the Woody’s office.  However, if you do not have a printer the company is more than happy to print out your labels for you. 

The new site also has the added bonus of arranging free collections from your house.  Enter the details, make your booking and a driver from Woody’s Express Parcels will call by for it the following day, or when it is convenient.   

“While this service will suit many busy people, we realize that some people prefer to come into the office and that’s still absolutely fine and we will always be happy to see them,” said Donald.  “Hopefully with more time to spend on one to one customer care thanks to the time saving benefits of the website.”  

Arranging a drop off at Woody’s mainland depot is now easier than ever before.  Whether a friend is taking your goods in or a company is dropping off your new living room suite, you can arrange it all through the new website. 

The service also offers a new tracking facility to track any parcel, whether it is one of your own shipments, or a delivery you are expecting.  The tracking option gives you maximum visibility and transparency over your goods with automatic updates on progress emailed or sent by SMS should you choose that option at time of booking.  

People with smart phones can also load up the Web App to organize and track their consignments at the tap of a button. 

 “Developed using a smart responsive design, the site is a fully-fledged Web Application, which works across all platforms, maximising our online Customer Service capabilities.  This includes; Android Smart Phones, Apple i-Phones, Tablets, and Desktop PCs.” said Donald. 

Catalogue returns, as well as deliveries, are becoming a part of life for modern islanders.  You can now arrange for Woody’s Express Parcels to pick up your return from your door via the new website.  

Donald, who has worked many long days getting the site up and running, describes its creation as a “labour of love.”   

He said: “We are overjoyed that this phase of our IT development agenda is complete, and just in time for December – a very busy month in the run up to Christmas - and hopefully it will all run smoothly and people will start to feel the benefits of it straight away.”  

He added: “We hope that the site is quite intuitive and will be easy and straightforward to use – we want to make life easier for our customers and we think this will do that,” said Donald.
